Important Advice for Commissioning Fitted Furniture

Most of us decide every so often that we need to make some changes, updates, or improvements in our homes, whether its decoration, floor covering, curtains/blinds, or furniture, which can include bespoke fitted furniture.

We all know that the above is getting more and more expensive year after year. For that reason, the decisions of what to do, how to do it, and who to engage to help us achieve the goal need to be right from all aspects point of view. For most of us, the cost of any update or refurbishment is very important, and for that reason, most of us should research, online, in the showrooms, and by inviting some of the relevant trade to obtain quotations, especially when it comes to bespoke fitted furniture.

We specialize in all kinds of bespoke fitted furniture, and we would always deter anyone from making any decisions too soon or on the day of the designer’s visit. We would always advise potential customers to obtain 3 written quotations. The prices of most services vary a lot, and in addition to the variation of prices, what is even more important is to check and understand what you have been quoted for.

With bespoke fitted furniture, there are many different aspects, such as something that looks inexpensive could represent only half of what you may be looking for. And on the other hand, you may feel like you have got all you need and unless you have taken it all in and understand what you are ordering, you may be making a big mistake.

The majority of us would agree on how valuable is the space in our homes, correct design should use as little as possible of the floor space (by going up to the ceiling) to create lots of storage without reducing the size of the room. As a company, we would advise you to look at what has been designed to see how much of the room/alcove area has been designed for storage and how much of the same area has been turned into a void, unused, or user-unfriendly area. As important as all the above is to please remember that storage with difficult access is the storage most of us should avoid.

Some companies use module furniture components i.e. carcasses, doors, drawers, shelf units etc. The furniture you may like to order should be of the size you like or of the size that exactly fits the available space. When it comes to wardrobes the are 2 families that we offer:

  1. Front Frame System (without backs, some sides, floor or ceiling)
  2. Full Carcase (wardrobe with all sides, floor and ceiling) this takes more of your floor space and offers about 15% less storage for the same floor space taken

Note: OUR PRICES ARE THE SAME FOR BOTH SYSTEMS.

Carcasses need to be manufactured to fit wall to wall and floor to ceiling. The doors should not only be of the correct height but also of even/equal width at whatever size they need to be, & not module sizes.

When it comes to the Front Frame system, the usable wardrobe space should have storage space floor up to the ceiling. A Full Carcasses wardrobe should have a void no higher than 80mm at the top and the same at the bottom.

Just to make the above easier to understand, if for example, your room height is 2360mm, the Front Frame should have full height storage of 2360mm with 2200mm height of the doors. A Full Carcass should have a storage height of 2200mm with 2200mm height of the doors.

What many will have experienced in the past are floor to ceiling wardrobes with big pelmet and very high-top infill (to hat) with a void, or space up to the ceiling which is difficult to use as it’s difficult to that space (doors too short). That is why made to measure/bespoke is important and valuable, especially if it is available the same or lower cost.

If the above is difficult to understand or to follow, please ask each supplier to explain in detail your order specifications. It is equally important to vet the potential bespoke fitted furniture supplier and check any available reviews.

Next ask all of the companies with whom you are thinking of placing your order to quote the price for like-for-like specifications. Alternatively, by asking them why should you place your order with them, that should highlight the differences and & held you  decide what is or isn’t important to you when commissioning your bespoke fitted furniture.

At the end of the day, we will not only provide you with bespoke (correct-size) furniture but also charge you less for it, and will always better the lowest price by 10%.
